CentenarianSteveElliswasbarely16whenhejoinedtheNavalReserveOfficers’TrainingCorps(ROTC)atTulaneUniversity—monthsbeforetheU.S.enteredWorldWarII.
Beforethatleap,theLouisiananative’smaritimeexperiencewasminimal.“ThebiggestthingIhadeverbeenonwasacanoe,”the100-year-oldveterantoldNewsweek.Yetsoon,hewouldserveaboardavesselmorethan300-feetlongand50-feetwide.
EllisgrewupinthesmalltownofAmite,andhisjourneyintomilitaryservicebeganwhenhisfathersignedhimupforROTCjustmonthsbeforetheJapaneseattackonPearlHarbor,thestrikethatpropelledAmericaintoglobalconflict.
InFebruary1944,thewarwasnolongerdistant.Administrators“cametomyclassroomonemorningandannouncedthatourclasswouldbecommissionedinthreeweeks,”Ellisrecalled.Atjust19,hewascommissionedasagunneryofficerandshippedofftothePacificTheater.
